In addition to demonstrating this interesting security device built into the US Air Force's nuclear bombers ...
... Wonder Woman 214 also reprinted a classic Golden Age story that I've always liked, "The Masquerader". Having taken a vacation as Diana Prince so Wonder Woman could help Steve Trevor track down a gang of international racketeers Princess Diana was very surprised when Steve mentioned that Diana Prince had returned early from her leave of absence and was back at work at Military Intelligence. So she accepted his invitation and accompanied Steve back to the office where she was very surprised to meet herself.
Something similar had happened once before but this time the double wasn't Diana White (nee Prince) the woman who had provided her secret identity. It was in fact her mother Queen Hippolyte returning to Man's World after 4000 years on Paradise Island. Having seen a dire future for her daughter in the Magic Sphere she had asked Aphrodite for leave to aid Diana and been told yes on two conditions; first absolutely no one was to learn her true identity, secondly return in three days. Intending to make use of their family resemblence Hippolyte planned to take her daughter's place in both identities thus preventing the fate she had seen and was forewarned to expect. Which inevitably lead to the confrontation below since Diana wasn't about to turn her identity over to a masked imposter without a struggle. So just as inevitably an amazon catfight erupted. In these more enlightened times it would have lasted the rest of the issue but in the forties all you got was one page of wrassling amazons. You may wonder why Wonder Woman couldn't see past a simple mask to recognise her mother. It's obviously a trait that runs in the family as Hippolyte couldn't recognise her masked daughter during the trials to pick the amazon to go to Man's World in the first place despite Diana being the only masked contestant. Nuff said, on with the family feud!
Great Hera! A faceful of amnesia gas! What will happen to Wonder Woman now?
